Here's what you need to know. Every model has two essentials; A Look Book & Comp Cards.
|THE LOOK BOOK
WHAT IS A LOOK BOOK & HOW MANY PRINTS SHOULD I FEATURE IN MY LOOK BOOK?
Usually a model will have about 20 -25 images and more as they gain more experience and have more photos to add. This is also where you will add any 'Tear Sheets' from magazines you may have been published. (literally tear the sheet out of the magazine you were featured in. Not as popular anymore since we are no longer a heavy print industry and more of a digital commerce industry now. But if you have any from the past or if you were featured in a printed catalog, this is where you can add your 'tear sheets')
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A LOOK BOOK?
It is your portfolio of BEST images to showcase your many looks and styles. It should be filled with images from head shots to full body shots. Show a wide range of styles, expressions and poses.
WHAT DO I DO WITH MY LOOK BOOK?
It is the portfolio you take with you to 'Go-See's' (auditions). You will show the agents your portfolio. This you will take back with you and keep always. Take it to every runway or agency audition.
WHERE DO I GET A LOOK BOOK & HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT IMAGES?
If you shot your portfolio with us, you can ask us at the studio for help, free of charge. Your photographer, Monica Hahn can help you choose the right mix of images if you are unsure. You can order a look book directly with us or we will direct you to a local source if there is one available.
If you did not shoot your portfolio with us but still would like some guidance, you can always sign up for a one-on-one portfolio review for help with your comp card selection & design as well as your look book portfolio selections.
THE COMP CARD
WHAT IS A COMP CARD?
Think of your comp card like a business card. You will bring these to your agency & runway 'Go See's" (auditions). You will hand these out to the agents and leave your comp card behind with them. Keep them at hand for pre show 'white parties' before runway events or other events where there will be designers. Hand them out so they can remember you and call upon you for spring/fall catalog or designer look book shoots.
WHAT IS FEATURED ON A COMP CARD?
The front of the card will feature your HEAD SHOT with your name. If you have a website address you can feature it in small below your name. Note: some agencies discourage your personal web address published on these cards as you are a model of 'their' agency.
The back of the card will feature 4 images. It will showcase a range of looks, styles and poses. Make sure to choose at least 1 full body image. The rest of the images can be half or three quarter body.
It will also feature your measurements and contact information. Our studio puts a direct link to your portfolio on it so that agencies can view more of your photos at their discretion. It gives you more visibility.
