Your skin is very important, so be good to it! It is one of the largest organs our bodies have, and it works hard every day to protect our bodies from harmful elements. Taking care of your skin can help it do its job better - helping you LOOK radiant and FEEL energized. Having clean, clear skin can boost your confidence by keeping you looking your best everyday – making sure you look great for the ‘gram!

Simple Step 1:
Prevention is key. Inside the Style Studio, our make-up artist Kia Thomas is giving you some tips on keeping your skin hydrated and healthy for that fresh dewy summery skin on-camera and off! Before stepping into the sun, our stylist Kia Thomas suggests applying Supergoop! Everyday Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50. Supergoop is not your toddler’s SPF. It’s fantastic to hydrate and protect your skin, without leaving a sticky white cast like so many sunscreens do.

Simple Step 2:
For summer FOUNDATION, our studio stylist Kia opts for NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation, which gives a phenomenal buildable (but lightweight) coverage for a radiant, light, natural ‘summer skin’ finish. Both available at Sephora!
Simple Step 3:
Finally, find a CHEEKY WATER BOTTLE this summer… Fill it at least 5 times (ideally 8 times) a day. Water is the magical serum for youthful skin. It flushes out the toxins that causes blemishes, acne and oil clogging pores. It has no calories, no caffeine but keeps your energy up and help you stay refreshed!

How to Apply Foundation for that Light, Summery Look?
Photo: Original Beauty Blender| nordstrom.com |
Instead of smearing your foundation in with your hands, try using a BEAUTY BLENDER in light dabbing motions. This will help set your foundation evenly with a pore-less finish. Beauty Blenders are a great way to prevent heavy build up avoiding the look a of thick ‘cakey’ foundation coverage. Instead, it will give you an even lightweight natural looking summer finish. Simple Step 4: Don’t forget to use a light FINISHING POWDER after your foundation to set the look, take away any stickiness to your foundation and give you a true clean skin look and feel. We use Sephora’s Matte perfection foundation powder at the studio. |

FRESH LOOK FOR YOUR VALENTINE!
Feel sexy and beautiful with the right look for you.
Valentine's Day is only a day away! You probably already have the perfect dress, shoes and jewelry, but what about your makeup? Should you go with the all too famous smokey eyes? Or how about a perfectly highlighted cheek bone? Wait! What about the lips! It is Valentine's Day after all!
This year, bold, matte lips are trending along side smokey eyes and contoured cheekbones, but wearing all three at once can be a bit overwhelming; so let's just stick to just one of them.
Matte lips not only give flawless definition, they also offer an extended wear time. What a perfect combination! Kissable soft, inviting lips and no need to constantly apply gloss which just loves to attract your hair and get caught in it anyway!
Tarte cosmetics has an amazing line of Matte Lip Paint that is not only highly pigmented, but also offers an extensive shade choice. I personally love the extensive line because not everyone can use the same nude or red tone to match their complexion.

A Great Pairing... To Complete Your Look Pair this look with a flawless complexion, winged liner and a pair of Ardell Wispies lashes and you will have a charming look for the perfect night out (or in!) You can find the products mentioned above at TarteCosmetics.com. |

Ahhh the Holidays... my favorite time of year.
It's the season where our schedule is filled with festive gatherings and fancy parties, giving us the excuse to break out our sequined dresses and the most crimson of lipsticks. HOLIDAY MAKEUP is my absolute favorite and because of the sales, December is the best time to pick up some products!
Here are two of MY FAVORITES:

Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in "Icon" is a show stopper. It is that perfect shade of red we are always on the hunt for, and the luxurious formula is well worth the...$28 price tag.*photo @hourglasscosmetics.com |
You can't rock a red lip without an equally exciting eye look, and the new Huda Beauty eye shadow palette in the "ROSE GOLD" has been my constant go to for day and night. These shadows are a dream for both formula and color, and the 3-D metal shades are exactly what you need to bring your look to the next level. *photo @shophudabeauty.com

It makes me smile because it tells you so much about the woman wearing it. With just a stroke of a brush, a smear of foundation, a swipe of eye shadow and a dab of lipstick; a woman is transformed into the BEST FORM of who SHE ALREADY IS. The beauty of makeup is that it's, simple. For the everyday woman it can become overwhelming with all the products to choose from on the market. But don't get caught up in the latest make up trends or the 'hottest' color this month - focus more on the woman you want looking back at you in the mirror and your choices will be much simpler. We all have certain color families that look best on us; stick with it. We all know what our best features are; focus on highlighting those areas. Make Up can be simple and easy. Here are a few tips to using makeup to mirror the women on the outside reflect the woman within.
FOUNDATION
The biggest struggle with foundation is matching it!
TIP: when picking out your shade, place a small dot of it on your jaw and try to match it to your neck and chest. If you neck is lighter than your face, match it to the darkest part of your body.
MY FAVORITE TRICKS
And an essential item in my own makeup bag is a multifunctional product. Like a blush that can also be used as an eyeshadow. Or a lipstick that can also be used as blush. This is a great way to minimize the items in your makeup bag and to make the makeup application process for on-the-go women SIMPLER, EASIER and LESS INTIMIDATING.
ONE TIP I'm always SHARING...
For those women who want to add a 'little something extra' to their makeup and think black eyeliner is too much.
Try a brown eyeliner, it still gives adds something extra but gives a much softer look. For and even softer look, try using a brown eye shadow as liner.
MY BEST ADVICE...
Have fun with it! Makeup is like fashion and style. Try different things and see what works for you. Don't take it too serious! There is No Single right way to wear make up. We all have different features, faces, skin tones, textures and personalities - all of which create that individual look that makes You Distinctively Beautiful!

Always glad to answer any beauty questions to get you looking & feeling your absolute.

YOU make you beautiful…... Just, say it aloud...

The DO’s & DON’Ts
Of Shooting A 'Model' Portfolio
Session, Pricing and Details at Monica Hahn Photography
The DON’Ts:
PHOTO SHOOT DON'TS
This is an important day, your photo shoot. We know you are excited for your shoot, but don't over do it. Keep it simple. Let your photographer walk you through wardrobe selection. It's important you select wardrobe, styles and looks that will make you the most marketable. More is not necessarily better. Agency's want to see a clean polaroid and clean beautiful shots of YOU, not as much about how elborate you can look. Keep the focus on YOU and your best assests
DON'T try to be Avante Guarde.
Keep your first portfolio shoot all about you. Don’t try to over create something wild you saw out of Vogue last week.
DON'T shoot in too many different locations on your FIRST shoot.
Keep it simple till you have your modeling techniques down. You’ll have enough to focus on in your first shoot, don’t add too many extra elements that will complicate and clutter.
DON'T wear Loud or Chunky shoes
Avoid Thick platforms. Avoid Anything that adds thickness or draw attention your feet. It's your face and body we want the attention to go to. For your First portfolio shoot, stick with nudes and black heels.
DON'T Shoot all your images in the same outfit.
DON'T Shoot clothing that looks old or worn.
A portfolio shoot is a perfect time to Buy or Borrow something fabulous!
DON’T try a new haircut or new make up the day before your shoot!
PORTFOLIO DON'TS
Don’t Showcase Outdated photos. Most agencies like the images to be no more than six months old to reflect the model’s current appearance and showcase up-to-date photography and fashion trends. Note: Modeling vintage styles with intentions is different than old photos with dated clothes and hair styles.
Your personal looks including your skin texture, skin color (tan/pale), hair length/styles and overall appearance change throughout the year. Especially kids, tweens and teens, their proportions, expressions and overall looks change evolve until they reach 20.
DON'T Have A Cluttered Portfolio! Your portfolio should be organized and ready to been shown. Don't include outtakes or additional photos in the back that are not meant to be seen. Make sure you are happy with every photo in your book and make sure it neat and clean.
….And Please DON’T stay out late and party the night before your shoot!
The DO’s:
DO PREPARE FOR YOUR SHOOT:
DO Practice & Perfect 5-10 Facial Expressions.
Expression is Everything! What you are wearing will tell the story; your expressions need to complete that message. Try these cues for different looks:
“sexy”, “intense”, “serious”, “pouty”, , “Gritty”, “mysterious”, “Flirty”, “Naughty/Mischievous”, "The DuckFace Pout”, "The Squint & Stare", "playful", “Laughter”, , “happy/smiling”, and "Confident/Powerful"
DO Practice & Perfect 5-10 Poses.
Look in fashion magazines while in front of your mirror and mimic the poses that capture you. See which poses are most comfortable for you and which poses are the most striking with your face and body type. Try Poses with these positions: "Sitting", "Standing", "squatting", "kneeling", "from the back", "over the shoulder", "sitting on a stool", "lying down", "leaning".
DO Get Your Hair Trimmed & Highlights Done 1 Week In Advance.
DO Get Plenty Of Sleep The Night Before.
Do Drink Water All Week Before Your Shoot. This will give your skin a refreshed look.
DO Invest In Chapstick, Visine and Moisturizer!
There is nothing worse than a beautiful face with chapped lips, dry skin or tired looking looking eyes. Chapstick & moisturizing should be part of your 'forever routine'. Visine the night before and the morning of your shoot is a definate!
DO Shoot A Mix Of Fashions & Styles.
Show that you can model contemporary looks and classic looks. Be sure to include casual looks & formal looks. Showcase looks that are youthful to more sophisticated. Show as much diversity as you can. Clothing and fashions will set the tone for these varying segments.
DO Show A Mix of Hairstyles & Make Up.
I suggest starting with light make up w/hair down to start your first looks - shoot a more natural casual look first. Have your professional hair/make up artist add to your palette for richer and more glamours looks as the shoot progresses.
DO Shoot In Layers
For a richer more complicated look. Remember your looks should not only showcase ‘you’ but also the fashions you are wearing. Add a scarf, a hat, gloves or jewlery to add depth to your look.
DO Include Swimwear, Lingerie and/or Tight Fitted Clothes.
Swimwear and ligerie is not necessary but most people like to have atleast on or two shots showing their body for tone, shape and figure. Fitted jeans or leggings work here.
DO Shoot For Hands, Feet and Details.
After shooting your headshots, consider wearing a few pieces of jewelry your ability to work with hands & jewelry. Make yourself marketable to a broad range of clients. Show tight in shots &
DO Shoot With Various Accessories:
Hats, scarves, sunglasses, jewelry, packages, bags, purses, flowers.
DO Use Various Base Props
such as: ladders, stools, benches, chairs, tables. Create interest in your images with these base props. Break free of your ordinary poses using these bases.
PORTFOLIO DO's
DO Put Your Best Work In The FRONT Of Your Portfolio. End with a strong image as well. Make sure the last image they see one leaves them with a good impression.
** DO Share your Online & Printed Portfolio with as many as many industry contacts who will see them!

Taking Proper Measurements: For Your Modeling Profile
Filling out your profile and statistics can be a little daunting, especially when it comes to measurements
Fear Not! Here's an easy -to-follow guide to help you out.
Why You Need Accurate Measurements
There are a few reasons why accurate measurements are so important. When casting directors are looking at submissions, they are often going through hundreds of applicants. If your measurements are left blank they will likely pass over you completely. If your measurements are listed but not accurate, it could mean showing up for a shoot only to get sent home when the clothes don’t fit.
In addition to casting directors, other members often search the various Modeling Online Listing sites. This allows them to find members with very specific measurements and if yours are not accurate you won’t show up in the search results and will miss out on potential job opportunities. By the way, this is also the case with age. If you’re not 100 years old and yet still want to show up in search results, you should enter your true age.
Getting Started
To get set up, grab a measuring tape and a friend. For accuracy, we recommend recording your measurements in swimwear or very fitted clothing. Unless otherwise noted, measurements will be most accurate if taken standing straight up with arms relaxed to your side. When you measure, you want the tape to lay flat across your skin, but not gap, pull or pinch.
How to Take Your Measurements
Height: While this one is rather straightforward, there are a couple things to remember. Height, in this case, refers to your height barefoot. Measure yourself against a wall with no shoes on.
Weight: This should be less of a problem. Step on a scale and voila! You have your weight!
Here is where things get a little tricky
Female Models
Bust: The trick here is that in modeling, your bust measurement is not always the same as the number on your bra. You want to measure at the fullest part of your bust without ‘smooshing your boobs with the measuring tape. For example, you may be a 32C but have closer to a 35-inch bust. Wear a supportive UNpadded bra.
Cup: Use the cup size you use to buy your bras.
Waist: When most people think of waist, they think of the size on jeans or where their pants sit. For modeling measurements, you want to measure around the smallest part of your waist. For you, this might mean at your belly button or an inch or two above it. Just look in the mirror, see where your stomach goes in most, and measure there.*
Male Models
Neck: Measure around your neck, starting about an inch above where your neck connects to your shoulders, right around the Adam’s apple. Rather than taking the tight-to-skin measurement, place an index finger inside the tape, loosening it slightly, and record that number.
Waist and Hips: Follow the instructions given for women.
Chest: Measure just under your armpits around the fullest part of your chest.
Sleeve: For the sleeve measurement, start in the middle of your lower neck between your shoulders. With your hand placed on your hip, extend the tape over your shoulder and then over your elbow to your wrist.
Inseam: Wearing only briefs, measure the inside of your leg from just below your crotch to your ankle.
Note: *If you are submitting for a jean designer, they may want to know your low waist size as well. For this measurement, let he measuring tape rest flat in the area just below your belly button and just above the start of your hipbones.
Using these measurements on your comp card?
Don't forget your SHOE size, DRESS size, HAIR color, EYE color....
And of course, your CONTACT Info!

Types of Modeling: Industry Genres and Categories Finding The Right Fit Means More Modeling Opportunities. |
|||
There are many types of modeling you will find in the industry. Some models only fit into one category, while another model may fit into multiple. Size, fit and beauty requirements vary according to type of model. Some modeling segments are agency represented, others find work as a freelance model. With that in mind, here are the modeling categories at a glance: | |||
FASHION MODEL |
EDITORIAL FASHION MODEL
|
FASHION CATALOG MODEL RUNWAY MODEL SPOKESMODEL PLUS-SIZE MODEL ART MODEL ALTERNATIVE MODEL FREELANCE MODEL |
|
FASHION MODEL: When you see the incredibly tall and lean figures that grace the runways and editorials for the leading fashion houses and designers; these are the High Fashion models. This category is the most exclusive and most difficult of all categories for a model to get into. As a whole, a fashion model MUST be tall, young, and thin. In addition, there are fashion model “size requirements”. While there is no universally-agreed upon, OFFICIAL “fashion-industry size-standard”, the size requirements in fashion modeling are TYPICALLY as follows: |
|||
Female Fashion Models § Height Requirement: 5’9” to 6’1” international / 5’8” to 6” regional & national Male Fashion Models § Height Requirement: 5’11” to 6’2” / 5’10” to 6’2” regional & national |
|||
EDITORIAL FASHION MODEL: This is modeling for magazine editorials and covers such as Vogue, Elle etc. The standard requirements for these models are similar to those in High Fashion and you must be very photogenic. Quite often the same models will work in both Editorial Print and High Fashion. These editorials provide great exposure for models even though the fees earned are sometimes relatively low. This is normal and it can take a few years to gain the experience needed to get the bigger paying jobs. Modeling fit requirements are the same as “Fashion Model” (listed above) in order to be considered for this category. Almost all editorial fashion agencies in the US are based in New York, but agencies/jobs can be found in other major cities (LA, Chicago) and overseas.
FASHION CATALOG MODEL: Here you will find many great opportunities for different model types, as the model is chosen to represent the target audience of the different companies. With the increasing number of websites that require models to promote their goods online, this is very lucrative for many models. |
![]() |
||
This segment of modeling is slightly less restrictive than fashion modeling in terms of requirements. Typically, only female models between 5’8” and 6’1” will find work here. Male models should be between 5’10” and 6’2”.
RUNWAY MODEL: Models that walk the catwalk or runway; a “live model.” Runway models are hired to use their bodies as a mechanism to display the fashion garments of a specific clothing designer. They MUST be tall (5’9” and up for females, 5’11” and up for males), slender, have measurements that fit the standard clothing size, and know how to walk the runway. The ‘walk’ and expression is key. If you can’t walk in heels with confidence, this will be very difficult for you to break into. COMMERCIAL MODEL: Most agency models work in this category. Commercial models work MANY different jobs, including: print advertisements, catalogs, campaigns, television shows, magazines, trade shows, and much more. There are no height or size requirements to be a commercial model. So even if you are DYING to be a fashion model, but find the fit & size requirements for mainstream “fashion modeling” hard to break into, you can still find great modeling jobs as a “COMMERCIAL fashion model”, doing fashion print and things of that nature. This category of modeling accommodates MANY types of looks: from the girl-next-door, fashionable & sophisticated, to middle-aged men, to those with very “unique/interesting” faces. The benefit of working in Commercial Print as a model is that the target audience of the advertisers varies considerably. |
|||
![]() |
PRINT MODEL: Print models are used for many different types of publications, such as: magazines, print advertisements, billboards, posters, calendars, campaigns, booklets, flyers, banners. Print models must have an attractive face, good skin, a nice body, and a pretty smile. Print models can find modeling work in one of two ways: through a modeling agency, or by freelance modeling. GLAMOUR MODEL: Glamour modeling focuses much more on the model’s appeal, beauty, and body with an emphasis on a models sexuality. Models in this category are considered very pretty; able to book work simply by being attractive, a nice body, and having a sort of “sex appeal”. While there are no height or size requirements, glamour models are typically at least 18 years old. Glamour models can work as non-nude models, or as nude models. Height restrictions tend not to apply, which is the great attraction to many models. If you are considering this area of modeling, take care as there are many dishonest people that take advantage of young models who are eager to get into modeling. If you are interested in Glamour Modeling it’s advisable to have a reputable agency looking out for your best interests. |
||
§ Non-nude glamour models are typically hired to appear in swimsuit, bikini, lingerie, and form-fitting attire. Often times they will find work in magazines, music videos, calendars, etc. They can find work as a freelance model, and they can also find other work through modeling agencies as a print model, commercial model, or promo model. § Nude glamour models are almost never represented by a mainstream modeling agency, and most always they will find modeling work through their own means (internet, friends, referrals, casting calls, networking, etc.). |
|||
PINUP MODEL: Pin-up models first gained notoriety in the 1940’s and 50’s, with the term “pin-up” referring to a physical photo of an attractive model, which could be “pinned up” on the wall. In the past, pinup models were more risqué than their current era. Today, modern pinup models (posing in the same manner and outfits of the 40’s and 50’s), seem to be less risqué than their current era, as times have changed and so have social standards. To explain: modern pinup models can be seen wearing classic 1-piece swimsuits, while modern glamour models can be seen wearing barely-there string bikinis. |
|||
![]() |
|||
ALT MODEL, or ALTERNATIVE MODEL: This genre of modeling does not conform to “typical” modeling standards. The models used in this genre are not the mainstream, cookie-cutter models. Many of them have tattoos, piercings, unusual hairstyles, etc. They can work in this industry with the help of internet websites, networking, and niche magazines. FETISH MODEL: A fetish model will be hired to model/display various fetishes. For example, latex clothing, bondage, foot photoshoots, etc. Almost always, these models are self-represented.
TV COMMERCIALS: Modeling in TV commercials does not have any overall criteria for height, size and age, as each commercial requires someone different and specific to that job. It is usually necessary to have some acting ability, but this can be natural ability or learned. There are many different types of TV commercials, ranging from the highly stylized photographic, to the performance led reality style. The great advantage in TV commercials for a model is that brands are continuously seeking models, which the general public can easily identify with. This opens up the doors to almost everyone, who feels that they have what it takes to work in this sector. Typically those represented by a model or actors agency have a better chance of appearing in TV commercials. REAL LIFE MODELS (People Models) and TV/Film Extras: If you like the idea of modeling, but do not fit into the above categories, then this could be for you. Real life models are used in advertising or corporate campaigns, when companies are looking to represent the everyday person.As a TV/Film Extra you will generally be non-featured (no speaking parts) and in the background of a scene. This can be fun and interesting to be part of, but it can also be long hours with lots of waiting around. The benefits are that if you are flexible with your days, it can be a good way to supplement your income.FREELANCE MODEL: A freelance model is one that is self-represented: they are not signed exclusively to any one modeling agency, they do not have an agent or a manager, and they are responsible for finding their own work. In addition, they are responsible for their own marketing, promoting, networking, and branding. This might all sound overwhelming, but in this day and age, freelance models have many avenues to get a career started. The internet is their main weapon/source; if properly harnessed, freelance models can still make a name for themselves without an agency. |
